On 24–25 September 2026, WICE researcher Diego Caballero-Vélez participated in the 15th Conference of the Committee for Migration Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, held in Gdańsk, Poland. On behalf of the WICE team, he presented preliminary findings from the study “At Risk, a Risk or Both? The Making of ‘Good’ and ‘Dangerous’ Russian Migrants in Europe.” Conducted as part of the WICE project, the study examines how migrants from Russia are perceived across different European countries, with particular attention to how perceptions of the Russian state and Russian society shape attitudes towards their admission, security concerns, and the conditions under which migrants from Russia are considered acceptable.
On 13 April 2026, WICE Project Leader Professor Inta Mieriņa participated in an international symposium held at the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge, UK. As part of the symposium, Inta Mieriņa took part in the roundtable discussion “Legacies of 1945 in the Baltic: History of Aggression, or Aggression of History?”, chaired by Professor Brendan Simms (University of Cambridge). The discussion also featured Edward Lucas (Center for European Policy Analysis), Professor Aleks Szczerbiak (University of Sussex), and Professor Marek Tamm (Tallinn University). The discussion explored the legacy of 1945 in the Baltic region, interpretations of history, and their significance for contemporary political and security discourses. Watch the discussion.
On 13 June 2025, Tenured Professor Inta Mieriņa of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FESS), University of Latvia, participated in a panel at the Tartu Conference on East European and Eurasian Studies titled “European Research Council funding grants: mission (im)possible for scholars in the ‘new’ member states?”. The panel was chaired by Una Bergmane (University of Helsinki) and featured presentations by Catherine Gibson (University of Tartu) and Laur Kanger (University of Tartu). Professor Mieriņa shared her insights on the challenges and opportunities related to securing ERC grants for researchers in the newer EU member states, highlighting structural barriers, institutional conditions, and the factors that shape excellence-driven research environments.
