CONFERENCEThis seminar introduces multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) as both a theoretical and methodological approach that examines how linguistic and non-linguistic semiotic resources (such as gestures, still or moving images, music, colors, etc.) contribute to the construction, enactment, and legitimization of social control and social inequalities through discourse.
The seminar begins with a general overview of discourse analysis, outlining its core concepts and demonstrating how they apply to the analysis of text in its broadest sense. It then explores how these concepts are understood within the framework of critical discourse analysis, highlighting the importance and role of multimodality in the study of discourse.
Following a discussion of selected approaches to the practical application of MCDA, a previous study on LGBTQ media representation in Hungarian and Irish media will be presented. This study partially applied MCDA, and, through selected examples, the seminar will demonstrate how the approach was implemented in practice and the results achieved.
The seminar will conclude with a discussion on how the practical applications of MCDA can enrich the analysis of a wide range of cultural products across various research fields, from broadcast news reports and political posters to films, music videos, and even monuments.
